Jan Krist is a writer/musician whose lyric lines ink out surprising expressionistic landscapes.
Krist takes her ordinary, plain Jane demeanor and all the elements we’ve learned to take for granted (6 strings and common time) and lets us know, this is not your ordinary woman with a guitar, even if it is.
Krist’s music has been described as “evocative…somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush, but it’s all Jan Krist. Unreservedly recommended.” (Billboard Magazine)
“…with breathtaking vocal leaps….(she) makes soul searching more enjoyable than it has a right to be.” (Entertainment Weekly).
In a second review of Krist’s work Billboard said of her ability as a songwriter; “Her talent as a songwriter equals – if not surpasses her vocal gifts. She has an uncanny way of cutting to the heart of a topic and providing the listener with food for thought.”
“When Planets Collide” Krist’s newest release is a collision of musical styles and observations both humorous and heartbreaking. It is the first of what we hope will be many on her self owned label, Outpost Records. It was recorded in Royal Oak, Michigan, at her home studio and produced by she and her husband, Alan Finkbeiner. The CD was engineered by Jim Kissling, Alan Finkbeiner and Jan Krist. “Planets” is a superbly crafted recording with performances by some of Detroit’s best musicians and the writing of one of Detroit’s most critically acclaimed writers, Jan Krist. “When Planets Collide” is available through a variety of on-line outlets including pastemusic.com.
